An effort a couple of Santa Monica High School students started to get their peers biking to campus is still rolling along four years later.
When “Bike It” launched in the fall of 2007, more than 80 students participated, according to LA.Streetsblog.org. That number doubled in 2008 and has continued to grow over the years, with walking and taking the bus later added. By 2010, the event (which is held twice a year in the fall and the spring) had more than 3,300 students from 13 schools around Santa Monica, LA.Streetsblog reported.
The push caught the eye of President Barack Obama, who awarded the program’s founders with an official Presidential Commendation.
